Take the Silver Line or a taxi from Logan, then check into a Beacon Hill guesthouse on a brick-paved street. The neighbourhood is steep and cobbled, so drag cases rather than carrying them uphill.

Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall evening
Walk through the food hall at Quincy Market and the upstairs meeting room at Faneuil Hall. The stalls close around 20:00, and the cobbled square in front is a good place for a first look at the waterfront.

Do I need to book Amtrak Acela tickets in advance for Boston to Philadelphia and DC?+
Yes. Acela fares rise steeply as departure approaches, and popular morning trains sell out. Book the Boston to Philadelphia and Philadelphia to Washington legs together once your dates are set. Business class is the standard choice; first class adds meals and more space at a higher price.
Are Smithsonian museums really free, and do I still need reservations?+
Admission to the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall is free, including Air and Space and African American History. Several still require free timed-entry passes booked online, and slots go quickly in summer and school holidays. Reserve as soon as your dates open and carry the pass on your phone.
How walkable is the Freedom Trail and the National Mall?+
The Freedom Trail is about 4 km of city streets, largely flat, and easy on foot over a full day. The National Mall is much larger than it looks, with long distances between the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. Wear comfortable shoes and use the DC Metro to shorten the longest stretches.
What is the best time for a Boston to Washington history trip?+
April to June and September to November give 15 to 25 C, good for the amount of outdoor walking this route involves. July and August are humid in all three cities, and winter can be icy underfoot on the Freedom Trail. Autumn foliage in Boston and around DC is a bonus in October.
