The valley has been a trade route since Roman times; the castles were built by prince-bishops and local lords to control tolls. The Lorelei rock marks the narrowest point, and the Rhine Castles Trail runs along the ridge. KD cruises cover the scenic section in a few hours, while trains on either bank are faster. Rüdesheim, Bacharach and Boppard are good bases. The valley is free to visit; cruises, castles and wine tastings charge separately.

April-October for cruises, vineyards and castle visits; December for Christmas markets. Winter is quiet and many boats stop running.
Marksburg is the most intact medieval castle; Rheinfels is a large ruin with tunnels; Stolzenfels is a restored Romantic palace. Pick one or two rather than rushing.
