Three days in Zhangjiajie cover Yuanjiajie (the Hallelujah-mountain inspiration), Tianzi Mountain, the Jinbian Stream and the Ten-Mile Gallery, then a flight via Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou for a full day o…
Take a taxi or the airport shuttle 35 km north to Wulingyuan, a run of about 50 minutes. Fixed fares are posted at the airport rank; agree the price or use the meter before leaving.
Walk Xibu Street, the restaurant and bar strip in Wulingyuan's town centre, for a first feel of the Tujia region. Stalls sell grilled tofu and cured meat skewers; most places take mobile payment.
Order sanxia guo, a dry wok of pork, tofu and vegetables cooked at the table, at a family restaurant off Xibu Street. Portions serve three, and the chilli level can be adjusted if you ask.

September to November is the window, when Jiuzhaigou's forests turn and Zhangjiajie's peaks clear after rain. Avoid July and August, the wet season, when landslides can close trails and roads. Late October is often the peak for colour, but book Jiuzhaigou entry early because daily visitor numbers are capped.
Fly into Zhangjiajie Hehua airport for Wulingyuan, then use the park's shuttle buses between viewpoints. For Jiuzhaigou, fly to Jiuzhaigou Huanglong airport via Chengdu, then take a bus or car to Zhangzha town. Both parks sell dated entry tickets online; check shuttle and cable-car tickets separately, as they are not always included.
Jiuzhaigou valley sits around 2,000 to 3,100 metres, high enough to notice but rarely severe. Take the first day gently, drink water and avoid rushing up stairs. The bigger altitude concern is the flight into Huanglong airport, which is higher than the valley, so plan a slow arrival and watch for headache or breathlessness.
Expect roughly $820-1,200 (about €720-1,040) per person excluding international flights. That covers mid-range hotels, park entry, internal shuttles and the flight between Zhangjiajie and Chengdu. Add cable cars, the Jiuzhaigou shuttle and meals. Book the internal flight early, as seats on the Chengdu route are limited.
