Two days in Beijing cover Qianmen and the Forbidden City, then the train south to Jinan for Baotu Spring, Nanjing for the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and Fuzimiao, Suzhou for gardens and Pingjiang Road, Sha…
Take the Airport Express to Dongzhimen and a short taxi to your hotel, allowing two hours with luggage. Lifts connect the platform to the street, so the route works with cases.
Walk the Qianmen street and turn into the Dashilar alleys for old shopfronts and snack stalls. Ninety minutes covers the main lanes; the gate tower is lit after dark.
Book a duck house a block from Qianmen for the dinner carved at your table. Reserve by app in the afternoon; the queue without a booking can run past an hour.

Use the official 12306 app or website, registering with your passport. Sales usually open about two weeks before departure, and popular routes and holiday dates sell out fast. At the station, scan your passport at the gate; no paper ticket is needed. Second class is comfortable and good value on all these legs.
It is brisk but workable, with hops of one to two hours between Jinan, Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai and Hangzhou. The later days are the tightest, with one city each day. If you want more breathing room, drop Jinan or Suzhou and give the time to Nanjing and Hangzhou instead. Book trains ahead to protect each connection.
April to May and October to November give the best spring and autumn scenery along the corridor. Avoid Golden Week in early October and the Spring Festival period, when trains and hotels are booked solid and prices jump. Summer is hot and humid, and winter is cold but quiet, with cheaper fares and fewer crowds.
There is no weighed baggage limit like on flights, and no liquid restrictions at security. Carry-on bags go in overhead racks or at the end of each carriage. Very large suitcases can be awkward on busy trains, so pack light for one-night stops and keep valuables with you. Arrive 30 minutes early to find your carriage.
