Fly into Surabaya's Juanda airport and drive up to Cemoro Lawan on the caldera rim. Day two is the dawn 4x4 jeep route across the sea of sand to Bromo's crater viewpoint for sunrise. Day three returns…
Meet your driver at Juanda terminal and head south on the toll road toward Probolinggo, then climb through the villages to Cemoro Lawang. The 4 hour drive has few good stops, so buy water and snacks before leaving.
Settle into a simple guesthouse on the caldera rim, where hot water and heating are rare. Ask your host to arrange the jeep for tomorrow before unpacking, and confirm the pickup time and price in cash.
Walk the rim path from the village toward the Penanjakan road as the light fades, with the volcano's plume ahead. The track is unlit and drops away sharply on the outer edge, so turn back at dusk and carry a torch.
Eat nasi goreng or mie goreng at the guesthouse, where menus are short but portions fuel the early start. Drink ginger tea to warm up, set two alarms and lay out your warmest layers before sleeping.

The viewpoint sits around 2,300 metres, and pre-dawn temperatures near the caldera can drop to around freezing, with wind chill making it feel colder. Pack a warm jacket, hat, gloves and layers, then strip down as the sun rises. Dust from the sea of sand is heavy, so a mask or scarf helps.
Juanda airport near Surabaya is the usual gateway, with a road transfer of roughly three to four hours to Cemoro Lawang on the caldera rim. Most travellers pre-book a private car or a tour that includes the drive, the jeep and a night or two on the rim, since public transport is slow and infrequent.
Yes. The sea of sand crossing to the viewpoint is not passable in a normal car, and jeeps with local drivers are arranged through your hotel or tour. Reserve the jeep when you book your room, confirm the pickup time, and expect a very early start around 3am to reach the viewpoint before sunrise.
It is demanding. The pre-dawn cold, the bumpy jeep ride, steep sandy steps to the crater rim and the altitude make it hard for young children, anyone with heart or breathing conditions, or travellers with limited mobility. If in doubt, watch sunrise from the viewpoint only and skip the crater climb.
