Land in Yogyakarta and browse Malioboro Street on the first evening. Day two is a dawn Borobudur tour with limited-entry sunrise tickets, day three the Prambanan temple complex, and day four the Sulta…
International flights arrive at Yogyakarta International in Kulon Progo, 45 km west of the city. The airport train reaches Yogyakarta station in about 40 minutes; a fixed-rate taxi takes an hour on the toll road.
Join the crowd on Malioboro's pedestrian stretch, where batik sellers, street musicians and food carts share the street. Bargain hard, keep moving with the flow and watch your phone in the crush near the market gates.
Try gudeg, the young jackfruit stewed with palm sugar and coconut, at a simple warung off Malioboro. Portions come with rice, chicken and an egg; the dish is sweet, so ask for sambal on the side to balance it.

Yes. Sunrise access to Borobudur is limited-entry and sells out, especially on weekends and in the May-September dry season. Book through the official Borobudur ticketing channel or a licensed local operator as soon as your dates are fixed, and check whether your ticket includes the temple structure or only the grounds.
Borobudur is about an hour's drive northwest of Yogyakarta and Prambanan about 30 minutes east, so most visitors hire a driver or join a small-group tour. For the dawn sunrise start, pre-book a driver the night before. Public buses exist but are slow and awkward for a short four-day trip.
May to September is the dry season, when the temple grounds stay dry and walkable and sunrise at Borobudur is more likely to be clear. Expect heat by mid-morning, so start early. The wet season brings heavy afternoon showers and slippery stone steps, though crowds and hotel rates drop.
Cover shoulders and knees with a sarong or light wrap, which is expected at both sites and sometimes provided at the entrance. Wear shoes you can slip off, since you climb barefoot or in socks on certain platforms. Bring a hat and water for the exposed stone courtyards, and expect many steps at Borobudur.
