Three days in central Rome cover the Colosseum's underground tier, the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Trajan's Forum, the Pantheon and the Mausoleum of Augustus, before a 70-minute Frecciarossa train to…
Clear immigration and take the nonstop train to Termini, then walk or take a taxi to your hotel. Buy the rail ticket at the airport station and validate it before the platform barrier.
Check in and ask for a neighbourhood map marked with the nearest bus stops. Historic-centre hotels often sit in listed buildings without lifts, so confirm stairs before booking.
Loop through Piazza Navona, the Pantheon square and Piazza della Rotonda as the crowds thin. Stop for a pizza al taglio, and keep valuables zipped in the busier lanes.

Underground and arena-floor tickets are released in limited batches, often around a few weeks to a few months before the visit date, and disappear quickly in spring and autumn. Check the official Parco Colosseo site regularly rather than relying on resellers, and have your passport details ready, since named tickets are checked at entry.
The final crater path is steep, loose underfoot and exposed, with roughly 20-30 minutes of climbing from the bus drop-off. There is no shade or railing for much of it. Travelers with knee, heart or balance issues often wait at the lower viewpoint instead. Wear grippy shoes and go early to avoid midday heat.
April to June and September to October give the most comfortable conditions, with temperatures around 18-26 C and softer light for the open sites. Pompeii has very little shade, so summer visits mean starting at opening and carrying water. Winter is quiet and cheap but can be wet and chilly on the exposed ruins.
The itinerary bases you in Naples for this section, which shortens the morning trip to Pompeii via the Circumvesuviana train and makes the Vesuvius bus connection easier. Rome works only as a long day trip that eats hours in transit. Staying in Naples also puts the National Archaeological Museum within walking distance.
