Day one arrives in Porto for a Ribeira dinner, day two is the Livraria Lello and Clerigos Tower with afternoon tastings at Taylor's and Graham's on the Gaia side, day three drives into the Douro valle…
Take metro line E from Porto Airport to Trindade, then change for São Bento and walk down to Ribeira in about 50 minutes total. Buy an Andante card at the airport machine; it covers metro, bus and some trains.
Settle into a Ribeira terrace for francesinha or grilled octopus with a glass of vinho verde. Ask for the prato do dia, which costs less than the a la carte menu, and book ahead for a river-facing table.

The Douro line train from Porto's Campanha or Sao Bento station follows the river to Pinhão and Régua in about two hours, with valley views most of the way. A rental car gives more freedom to reach hillside quintas, but the train plus a taxi or estate pickup covers most tasting rooms.
Harvest usually runs from mid-September into October, when estates are pressing and some offer picking visits. May and June are quieter and greener. The big Gaia port lodges take walk-ins, but hillside quintas such as Noval or la Rosa want an email booking weeks ahead, especially at harvest.
The legal drinking age in Portugal is 18, so tasting flights are for adults. Non-drinkers can still enjoy the Rabelo boat ride, valley walks and long estate lunches, and many quintas pour juice or water. Driving days are short, which suits mixed-age groups, but the trip is built around wine.
Portugal is in Schengen, so many passports, including US, UK, Canadian and Australian, enter visa-free for 90 days in any 180. Other nationalities need a Schengen visa obtained before flying. Check the Portugal visa section for your nationality, and note passports should be valid three months past your Schengen exit.
