Arrive and open at Maxwell Food Centre. Day two is Newton Food Centre for chili crab. Day three is East Coast Lagoon for satay by the beach. Day four flies home.
Take the East West line from Changi to the city, changing at Tanah Merah, and use a contactless bank card at the gates. Buy a data SIM at the airport so you can look up hawker stalls along the way.
Maxwell Food Centre sits beside Chinatown MRT and fills with office workers until about 19:30. Join the Hainanese chicken rice queue early, then share a table with strangers as locals do and return your tray.
The Chinatown lanes around Keong Saik keep old-style coffee shops serving kaya toast and soft eggs into the evening. It is a short walk from Maxwell and a gentle way to finish the first night.

Yes. Singapore licenses and regularly inspects hawker stalls, and hygiene standards are high. Choose busy stalls with fast turnover, and drink bottled or boiled water. Bring napkins, expect shared tables, and return your tray to the rack, as clearing tables is required and enforced. Many stalls open at lunch and close by mid-afternoon.
Many stalls take cash and QR payments such as PayNow, but not all accept international cards. Carry small notes and coins, since some older stalls are cash-only. Tipping is not expected. Prices are fixed and displayed, so you pay the listed amount at the counter, either before or after eating depending on the stall.
Look for stalls displaying a halal certificate, common in the Malay and Indian Muslim sections of most hawker centres. Vegetarian options appear at Indian stalls and dedicated vegetarian counters. Maxwell and Newton both mix cuisines; ask stallholders directly, as dishes may contain pork, lard or fish sauce even when they look vegetable-based.
Maxwell Food Centre peaks at weekday lunch when office workers arrive, roughly midday to 2pm, so go early or mid-afternoon for seats. Newton Food Centre is busiest in the evening, especially at weekends, when satay and seafood stalls fill up. Many stalls close one day a week, so check ahead if you are targeting a specific dish.
