Arrive in London, take the train to Manchester and the Lake District for a lake cruise and a fell hike, then on to Glasgow, the West Highland Way around Fort William, Glen Coe and Loch Ness, finishing…
The Elizabeth line reaches Tottenham Court Road in 30 minutes, then the Northern line runs to Euston. Allow an hour and a quarter with a pack, and top up water before boarding.
Advance tickets are far cheaper than walk-up fares on this route. The train passes the southern Pennines on the approach, a preview of the walking ahead.
Outdoor shops around Piccadilly and the Northern Quarter stock gas canisters and waterproofing spray. An early dinner and a supermarket stop here saves time in the Lakes.

The route suits regular walkers rather than beginners. Scafell Pike is a long, steep day with rough ground and changeable visibility, and West Highland Way stages near Fort William can run several hours. Build up with hill walks before you go, and choose the shorter Helm Crag option if you want an easier day.
Late May to September offers the longest days and the most stable conditions, with daylight in Scotland stretching past 10pm in June. Snow can linger on high ground into spring, and autumn storms arrive quickly. Check mountain weather forecasts each morning and keep a low-level alternative for bad days.
A guide is not required, but it is worthwhile for Scafell Pike and remote Glen Coe routes if you lack navigation experience. Guided groups handle route choice and weather calls, and local operators run day walks from Ambleside and Fort William. Solo walkers should still carry a map, compass and charged phone.
Rail works well between walking bases: London to Oxenholme or Windermere for the Lakes, then onward to Glasgow, with trains to Fort William on the West Highland line. Book Advance fares for the long legs and keep a rest day after overnight travel. Local buses fill gaps to trailheads and villages.
