Take the Elizabeth line to Tottenham Court Road, then the Northern line to Euston. Allow 70 minutes with luggage, and book the onward train by app before arriving at the concourse.
Advance tickets on the Avanti service are far cheaper than walk-up fares. Sit on the left for glimpses of the Chilterns and the Peak District fringe on the approach.
The restored canal basin has waterside bars in former warehouses. It is a 15-minute walk from the Northern Quarter, and terraces fill quickly on warm evenings.

For the Scottish section, yes. Trains reach Windermere, Glasgow and Inverness, but Glen Coe, Loch Ness viewpoints and Skye's scattered sights are far more practical by car. Book an automatic early, confirm one-way drop-off between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and allow for narrow single-track roads on Skye.
May, June and September are the sweet spots: long daylight, the best chance of dry weather and fewer visitors than July and August. Midges are most active from June to August around still, damp evenings, especially near lochs. Winter brings short days and possible snow on Highland roads.
Pack waterproof jacket and trousers, warm layers, walking shoes with grip and a small daypack, even in summer. Highland weather can change within an hour, and Windermere cruises and Skye viewpoints are exposed. Add midge repellent for summer evenings, a power bank and a paper map for areas with weak signal.
Plan for roughly $1,640–2,390 (about €1,430–2,080) per person excluding international flights. That covers guesthouses and hotels, some National Rail legs, several days of rental car, fuel and paid lake cruises. Food in remote Highland areas costs more, so carry supplies from larger towns before heading west.
