Arrive in Hanoi and take the overnight sleeper bus to Sapa, then two guided trekking days across the terraced fields through minority villages, ending with a return sleeper bus to Hanoi for departure.…
Clear immigration and take a Grab or the airport bus to the Old Quarter, leaving bags at the hotel or a luggage shop for the day. The run takes 45-60 minutes; a day bag is enough for the bus to Sapa.
Walk the lake loop, cross to Ngoc Son Temple, then drift through the guild streets for a late lunch and coffee. Keep an eye on the clock; sleeper buses leave from the Old Quarter in the evening.
Board an overnight sleeper bus from the Old Quarter for the 5 hour run to Sapa, with a reclining berth and a blanket. Book a lower berth if you are tall, and keep valuables in a small bag with you.

The route is graded hard: expect five to seven hours of walking a day on steep, uneven and often slippery paths, at around 1,500 metres. You do not need climbing skills, but decent cardio fitness and broken-in boots matter. Porters can carry bags, and shorter village walks suit weaker walkers.
September to October brings golden rice terraces and clear views, while March to April has water-filled paddies and mild temperatures. December to February is cold, damp and often foggy. Avoid June to August, when heavy rain makes trails muddy and landslides can close roads.
Sleepers leave Hanoi in the evening and reach Sapa in roughly five to six hours, arriving early morning. Book a lower berth if you are tall, bring layers since air conditioning is strong, and keep valuables with you. Some services stop at Lao Cai rather than Sapa town, so confirm the drop-off.
Bring layers: mornings and evenings are chilly even in spring and autumn. Pack waterproof boots with grip, a light rain shell, a warm fleece, sun protection and insect repellent. Cash is needed in villages, and dress modestly for homestays and markets. Leave heavy luggage in Hanoi if possible.
