Sri Harmandir Sahib was begun in the 16th century under Guru Ram Das and has been destroyed and rebuilt more than once. The building sits at the centre of the Amrit Sarovar, the pool pilgrims circle and bathe in, and its upper storeys are covered in roughly 750 kg of gold leaf. Entry is free and open 24 hours, with no ticket and no charge for the langar, the community kitchen that feeds anyone who arrives. Early morning around 4:00 to 6:00 brings the opening ceremony; evenings are the most atmospheric. Amritsar's railway station is a short rickshaw ride away.
