The market sits on a canal dug in the 1860s to link the Mae Klong and Tha Chin rivers, and boats have traded along it ever since. It is busiest from about 8am to 11am, when narrow boats pack the main channel and the banks fill with stalls selling mango sticky rice, coconut pancakes and boat noodles. Come early to see commerce rather than tour groups; by late morning the pace drops and the light gets harsh. Minivans from Bangkok take about 90 minutes. Boat rides cost a few hundred baht, or you can walk the towpaths for free. November to February is cooler and drier.
