Arrive and transfer to Tung Chung for the Ngong Ping 360 cable car to Tian Tan Buddha and Po Lin Monastery vegetarian lunch. Day two spends the morning in Tai O stilt-house fishing village and returns…
The ride takes about 25 minutes over Lantau's hills and the airport approach. Standard cabins cost less than the glass-bottomed ones; buy online and pick a morning slot before the tour coaches arrive.
Climb the 268 steps, circle the statue, then take the vegetarian set meal in the monastery refectory. Tickets are sold until mid-afternoon; cover shoulders and knees before entering the temple halls.
Follow the signposted path behind the Buddha to the Wisdom Path, a row of wooden columns carved with sutras set against the hills. The walk takes 15 minutes each way, mostly flat with some shade.

October to December is the most comfortable window, with 18-25°C, low humidity and mostly clear skies, which suits the exposed paths at Tai O and Cheung Chau. Spring brings humidity, fog and drizzle; summer sits inside the July-September typhoon season, when ferries and the Ngong Ping cable car can be suspended. Winter is mild but breezier.
Ordinary and fast ferries leave from Central Pier 5 through the day, and you generally buy at the pier or tap an Octopus card, so no reservation is needed. Weekends, public holidays and the Bun Festival period get busy, so arrive early and expect queues. Check the operator's timetable the night before, since sailings thin out late.
Yes, the cable car closes for scheduled maintenance, usually a few days at a time, and high winds can also stop it. Check the operator's site before you set the day, and keep the local bus from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping as a backup; it is slower but runs in most conditions. Crystal cabins sell out first, so book ahead for the glass floor.
Both are easy to moderate on foot: Tai O is flat boardwalks and lanes over stilt houses, while Cheung Chau adds a gentle climb to the Cheung Po Tsai cave, with steps and a squeeze through a narrow passage. Expect a few hours of walking a day in sun and humidity. Wear grippy shoes, carry water, and skip the cave with very young children.
