Fly into DPS and base first in Kuta, then do a one-day Ubud excursion to the terraces and temples, a Nusa Dua water-sports day, a Lembongan or Nusa Penida island trip, and finish with a Jimbaran beach…
Immigration at DPS can take 40 minutes at afternoon peak, so use the e-gates if your passport qualifies. Kuta hotels sit 15 to 25 minutes from the terminal; buy a taxi ticket at the official counter, not from touts.
Walk the sand north from the Kuta Beach monument as the light drops, watching beginner surfers on the inside break. Keep bags zipped and stay between the flags, since rip currents pull hard at the change of tide.
Duck into the narrow lane behind Kuta Beach for a cheap grilled fish or nasi goreng dinner at the warungs that line it. Portions are large, beer is cold and most places take cash only, so visit an ATM on the way.

Kuta has a persistent rip current and a shorebreak that catches swimmers out, and red flags mean no swimming. Bathe between the flags where lifeguards are watching and keep children close. Nusa Dua and Sanur are calmer for families. For water sports, only use operators with visible licensing and life jackets.
Use ride-hailing apps or a private driver for the Kuta-Ubud run, which takes about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic, and roughly 30 to 45 minutes from Kuta to Nusa Dua. A driver booked by the day usually costs less than several separate trips and lets you stop at Tegallalang or Tanah Lot.
April to October is the dry season, with calm seas and clear days at Kuta, Nusa Dua and on the Nusa Penida crossing. May, June and September are quieter and cheaper than the July-August peak. Avoid the November-March wet season if boat trips and water sports are the priority, as crossings get rough.
Book island and water-sports day trips at least a few days ahead in high season, and a week or more for July-August, when fast boats and licensed operators fill up. Confirm pickup time, whether hotel transfers are included, and the operator's licence before paying. Wet-season crossings can be cancelled for safety.
