Clear immigration at New Chitose and take the rapid train to Sapporo Station in about 40 minutes. The train runs frequently and handles luggage well; buy an IC card at the airport for later tram and subway rides.
Choose a counter in Ramen Alley for Sapporo miso ramen, topped with corn, butter and bean sprouts. The alley is narrow and busy after 18:00; many shops are cash-only and close when the broth runs out.
Walk the long park through the city centre under snow, with the TV tower lit at the eastern end. The path is cleared and free; wear boots with grip, since the surface packs into ice overnight.

Not strictly, but a car gives far more flexibility for snow-covered farmland and photo stops. JR Hokkaido trains and Donan buses connect the main towns, while self-drive requires winter tyres and confidence on icy roads; check rental terms and snow forecasts first.
The festival usually runs in early February for about a week, and Sapporo hotels sell out months ahead at premium rates. Book accommodation and flights as soon as dates are announced, and expect crowded trains and icy pavements around the main sites.
Heavy snow and strong winds regularly delay or cancel flights into and out of New Chitose between December and February. Build a buffer day before any international connection, buy travel insurance, and check airline and JR Hokkaido status before heading to the airport.
Expect well below freezing, with Sapporo often around -5 to -10 C and Furano colder, plus wind chill and deep snow. Pack insulated waterproof boots, thermal layers, gloves and a hat; hand warmers and slip-on ice grips are widely sold locally.
