Do I need a guide to hike the Vikos Gorge from Zagoria?+
The 12 km one-way route takes six to eight hours and is waymarked but rough underfoot. A guide is worthwhile for navigation, transport back from the gorge exit and weather judgment. Start early from Monodendri, carry water, and check conditions locally before setting out.
Is the Mytikas summit on Mount Olympus suitable for inexperienced hikers?+
No. Mytikas involves serious scrambling and exposed sections and should be attempted only with experience or a guide. Inexperienced walkers can still enjoy the refuge trails and lower viewpoints. Check snow conditions, since high ground can hold snow into early summer.
What is the best month to hike Mount Olympus and the Vikos Gorge?+
May to September is the practical window, when refuge trails and gorge paths are generally open. Snow can linger above 2,000 m into June. July and August are hottest, so hike early and watch for afternoon storms. Spring and early autumn are cooler but can bring rain.
How do I reach Meteora and the Zagoria villages without a car?+
Trains and long-distance buses link Athens and Thessaloniki, and regional buses serve Meteora and Ioannina. Services to Zagoria are sparse, so a rental car or arranged transfer saves hours. At Meteora, cover shoulders and knees for monastery visits, and check opening days per monastery.
