Arrive into Tokyo and base in Shinjuku for three nights: Shibuya Crossing at dusk, Senso-ji and Tokyo Skytree, then the Imperial Palace before an evening Shinkansen to Kyoto. Kyoto days cover Fushimi…
Clear immigration, then ride the Narita Express or Keisei Skyliner with a connecting train to Shinjuku. Allow about 90 minutes door to door and keep your passport ready for the IC card counter.
Join the scramble from the crossing itself, then watch the tide of people from the free station walkway above. Weekday evenings after 18:00 are the busiest and most photogenic, so arrive a little early for a rail spot.
Squeeze into a six-seat yakitori counter in this narrow alley of smoke and lanterns. Order a mixed skewer set and a highball, and expect a small seating charge; many stalls take cash only and close early.

Visa rules depend on your passport. US, Canadian, UK, EU and Australian travellers can usually enter visa-free for up to 90 days of tourism, while other nationalities may need to apply in advance. Check the Japan visa section and your nearest Japanese embassy before booking flights.
Cherry blossom timing shifts each year and varies by region, but late March to early April is the usual window in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Rooms can cost 50-100% more and sell out months ahead, so reserve hotels and Shinkansen seats as soon as your dates are fixed.
A nationwide JR Pass rarely pays off on this route, because Tokyo to Kyoto and Kyoto to Osaka are short hops. Price the pass against individual Shinkansen and JR tickets for your exact dates before buying, and note that Nozomi trains are excluded from the pass.
Pack light and use Japan's takuhaibin luggage forwarding: hotels and convenience stores send bags to your next hotel, usually arriving the following day for a modest fee. Carry a small overnight bag on the Shinkansen instead of wrestling suitcases through crowded stations.
