Arrive and open at the National Mosque. Day two is a KTM Komuter ride up to Batu Caves. Day three visits the Sri Mahamariamman Temple in Chinatown before departure.
Ride the non-stop airport train from KLIA to KL Sentral in 28 minutes for roughly 55 ringgit. Departures run every 15 to 20 minutes; buy at the counter or machine and keep the ticket for the exit gate.
Visit the modern mosque with its folded concrete roof and 73-metre minaret, open to non-Muslim visitors outside prayer times. Robes are lent free at the entrance; remove shoes and keep voices low in the prayer hall.
Eat at a simple Malay restaurant in the village quarter beside KLCC, with nasi campur, grilled fish and sambal on display. Point at what you want and pay by the dish; most places close by 22:00.

The National Mosque lends robes to visitors in shorts or sleeveless tops, and shoes come off at the entrance. Women may be asked to cover their hair. At Sri Mahamariamman Temple, remove shoes and avoid pointing your feet at shrines. Covering shoulders and knees works at all three sites on this route.
Take the KTM Komuter line from KL Sentral to Batu Caves, roughly 30 minutes, then walk to the rainbow steps. Trains run less often than the LRT, so check the return timetable before you go up. Grab is a simple alternative and avoids a wait, particularly in the late afternoon. Rail fares are low.
Yes, unless the festival itself is your reason to visit. Thaipusam draws very large crowds, with processions, road closures and heavy traffic around the caves, and the steps become slow and packed. The date follows the Tamil calendar, usually falling in January or February, so check it before fixing your dates.
The 272 steps are steep and uneven, with monkeys along the railings, and there is no lift. Fit adults manage with a few stops. Children and older visitors can stay at the base, where the giant statue and cave mouth are visible, and skip the climb. Go early, carry water and hold the handrail.
