Day one arrives in Marrakech, day two drives the hour to Imlil at the foot of the Atlas, day three hikes up to the Jebel Toubkal base camp - the highest peak in North Africa - day four crosses the Ber…
Book an airport pickup through the riad, since the medina lanes are too narrow for cars and a porter meets you at the gate. Fixed transfer prices are posted at the taxi rank; ignore touts inside the terminal.
Try on hiking boots and rent poles, crampons and a sleeping bag liner from the trek shops near the medina edge. Shops sell used gear alongside new; check sole wear and zip condition, and haggle on multi-item rentals.
Eat grilled lamb and salad at a square stall, then walk the edge of the medina before an early night. Stalls start closing after 23:00, and the quietest tables are in the back rows away from the performers.

Yes in practice. Authorities require a licensed mountain guide for Toubkal ascents and most High Atlas routes, and guides arrange permits, mules and refuge beds. Hire through a recognised agency in Imlil or Marrakech, check insurance and acclimatisation plans, and confirm what the price includes before you go.
This route reaches around 3,200 m at the refuge, so you need steady hill fitness and some multi-hour walking experience. Build up with long day hikes beforehand, ascend slowly, drink water and watch for headache or nausea. The summit push is optional and weather-dependent; turn back if altitude symptoms appear.
April to June and September to October offer the most reliable weather, with wildflowers in spring and clear, cool days in autumn. Winter brings snow and ice above the villages, requiring crampons and winter gear. July and August are hot but manageable if you start early. Check the Imlil valley forecast before setting out.
The full Toubkal base camp route suits fit adults, not young children. Families and older travellers can still enjoy Imlil and Aroumd on gentler valley walks of two to four hours, with mules carrying bags and guesthouse nights. Ask your guide to tailor stages and skip the higher passes.
