The UAE is a federation of seven emirates strung along the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, and each one has a different character. Abu Dhabi, the capital, holds the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre Abu Dhabi, a museum under a steel dome on Saadiyat Island. Dubai, its biggest city, is built around the Burj Khalifa, the Palm Jumeirah and the Burj Al Arab, while the creek and gold souk still work a short metro ride from the towers. North of Dubai, Sharjah keeps a dense cluster of museums and heritage houses, and Ras Al Khaimah adds beaches, the Hajar Mountains and Jebel Jais. Inland, Al Ain's oases and the dunes of Liwa show a country that is mostly desert. Roads and taxis connect the emirates, with Abu Dhabi to Dubai about 90 minutes by car, and Dubai's metro is the simplest way around that city. Food runs from Emirati machboos and luqaimat to Lebanese grills and Indian thali, with shawarma and karak chai on most corners. Budget travellers spend $60–100 a day, mid-range $120–200 and luxury $280 or more, and Dubai is noticeably dearer than the northern emirates. November to March brings 18–28°C days and the Dubai Shopping Festival; summer is punishingly hot, so sightseeing moves indoors. Aim for that winter window, or the shoulder weeks in April and October for lower rates.
High Season (Nov–Mar) The cool season offers pleasant temperatures of 18–28°C with low humidity — perfect for exploring Dubai, Abu Dhabi, desert safaris, and outdoor attractions. The Dubai Shopping Festival in January draws massive crowds. This is peak tourist season with higher prices. Shoulder Season (Apr, Oct–Nov) Transition months offer warm weather that''s still manageable for morning and evening outdoor activities. Hotel rates are lower than peak winter months, and attractions are less crowded. Good value overall.
