Fly into Salzburg (SZG) or Munich (MUC, then 1.5 hours by car), then train and bus between the lake towns. Days: St Wolfgang lake cruise and Schafberg cog railway, Bad Ischl's Kaiservilla, Hallstatt's…
Take bus 2 into Salzburg, then train and bus to St Wolfgang, or drive the 50 minutes directly. Buy a Salzkammergut day pass if using several buses; the last connection leaves before 20:00.
Eat grilled lake trout or kaspressknodel at a guesthouse terrace above the Wolfgangsee as the light fades. Book a table by the railing in summer; village kitchens close around 21:00 and many shut one day midweek.

Yes. Trains and buses connect Salzburg with St Wolfgang, Bad Ischl and Hallstatt, and lake ferries link the shoreline stops. A car helps with the Gosausee, but buses run there too. If you do drive, Hallstatt needs a parking reservation in advance, and village parking fills early in summer.
May to September brings 18-22C days, green mountains and swimmable lakes. Mountain weather changes fast, so pack a windproof and waterproof layer even in midsummer. The Schafberg cog railway and lake cruises run in the warm months. December to March is ski season, with many lake hotels closed.
Take the train to Hallstatt station, then the small ferry across the lake to the village; the crossing is short and timed to trains. From Salzburg, change at Attnang-Puchheim. Arrive early in summer, as village paths and the viewpoint get crowded by midday.
Plan around $1,200-1,790 (about EUR 1,040-1,560) per person without international flights. Comfort-level guesthouses, rail and bus tickets, lake cruises and the Schafberg railway fit inside that. July and August raise resort prices 40-70%, so late May, June or September stretch the budget further.
