Arrive in Sofia and stay central, then the cathedral and St George, Vitosha Boulevard and local market, the National History Museum and Boyana Church, before departure. Get around by tram and on foot.
Clear arrivals, then take metro Line 1 to Serdika in about 20 minutes. Buy a single ticket from the machine and validate it; the ride is cheaper and faster than a taxi at peak hours.
Walk the square between the cathedral and the old Roman ruins, then pick a cafe on the pedestrian streets nearby. Locals eat late, so tables stay free until about 20:00; service is relaxed.

The metro is the simplest option, connecting the airport to the centre in about 20 minutes on the line toward the city. Public buses also serve the terminals, and taxis or ride-hailing apps are available outside arrivals. Agree the fare or use the app meter, and avoid unlicensed drivers approaching inside the terminal.
The central sights are close together: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the St George rotunda, Vitosha Boulevard and the main squares sit within a walkable core. Use trams and the metro for longer hops such as the National History Museum, which is outside the centre. Comfortable shoes matter because pavements are uneven in places.
Expect around $900-1,350 (about EUR 780-1,170) per person for this budget city break. That covers a central hotel or guesthouse, tram and metro fares, museum tickets and casual meals. Sofia is one of the cheaper EU capitals, but book early for May, June and September when demand peaks.
Sofia is generally a safe city for visitors, with the usual big-city precautions. Watch for pickpockets on busy trams, around Vitosha Boulevard and at the central market, and keep bags zipped in front. Avoid unlit side streets late at night, use licensed taxis, and leave passports in the hotel safe rather than carrying them.
