Arrive in Sofia for the cathedral and city sights, a Rila Monastery day trip, the bus to Plovdiv for the old town and Roman theatre, then the bus north to Veliko Tarnovo for Tsarevets Fortress, before…
Clear passport control at SOF, then take metro Line 1 to Serdika station in about 20 minutes. Buy a single ticket from the machine and validate it at the gate; trains run every 10 to 15 minutes until around midnight.
Walk the pedestrian street from Sveta Nedelya Square toward the Vitosha mountain backdrop, pausing at a bakery for banitsa and ayran. Cafes stay busy late, and the tables facing the street are the ones locals wait for.
Sit down at a traditional mehana for shopska salad, grilled kebapche and a glass of rakia. Kitchens usually serve until 22:00 or later; ask for the daily lunch menu if you want a cheaper plate.

Bulgaria follows Schengen short-stay rules. US, UK, Canadian, Australian and Japanese passports can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Other nationalities may need a Schengen visa arranged before travel. Check the Bulgaria visa section for your passport, and confirm validity of at least three months beyond departure.
May, June, September and early October give 15-25°C days, open sites and lower prices than midsummer. July and August are hotter at 25-30°C and busiest on the coast, though city sights stay manageable. November to March is cold inland and some mountain access is limited, so shoulder months suit this route best.
Plan roughly $1,500-2,240 (about EUR 1,300-1,950) per person for this budget-style loop. That covers mid-range guesthouses, intercity buses, museum entries and everyday meals. Sofia and Plovdiv have cheaper rooms than Veliko Tarnovo in high season, so book those nights early if travelling in July or August.
Intercity buses link all three cities and are the simplest option. Sofia to Plovdiv takes about two hours on frequent services, and Plovdiv to Veliko Tarnovo runs several times daily. Buy tickets at the bus station or through local operators a day ahead in summer. Trains exist but are slower on these routes.
