Arrive in Sofia for Nevsky Cathedral and the Boyana Church's medieval frescoes, then an organised day tour to the Rila Monastery, a light summer hike in the Seven Rila Lakes area, and departure.
Ride metro Line 1 from the terminal to Serdika in about 20 minutes and validate your ticket at the gate. Machines accept cards; trains run frequently until around midnight.
Visit the gold-domed cathedral as the light fades, when the interior lamps come on. Entry is free; the crypt icon museum charges a small fee and closes earlier, so see it first if it matters to you.
Eat at one of the small restaurants along Oborishte street, where monastery-style dishes and grilled vegetables appear alongside meat. Portions are generous; a shared starter and main is usually enough for two.

Cover shoulders and knees; shorts, vests and short skirts are usually refused at active monasteries. Women often wrap a scarf or borrow a skirt at the door of Rila Monastery. Bring a light layer too, since stone churches and the mountain monastery stay cool even in summer. Remove hats inside and keep voices low during services.
The lakes are usually walkable from late June to early October, depending on snow. The chairlift from Pionerska hut cuts most of the ascent, then a marked loop links the lakes in a few hours. Check lift operating dates and mountain weather before going, and carry a jacket, water and sun protection at this altitude.
Yes for most visitors. Organised day tours from Sofia handle the two-hour mountain drive each way and usually include time at the monastery and sometimes Boyana Church. Public buses run but involve a change and tight timings. Book a day or two ahead in summer, and confirm whether monastery entry and lunch are included.
Entry follows Schengen short-stay rules. US, UK, Canadian, Australian and Japanese passports enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Other nationalities may need a Schengen visa before arrival. Check the Bulgaria visa section for your passport, and confirm validity of at least three months beyond departure.
