Arrive in Sofia, bus or train to Plovdiv for the old town and Roman theatre, then north to Veliko Tarnovo for the Tsarevets night light show and the old-town lanes, before returning to Sofia for depar…
Take metro Line 1 from the airport to Serdika, then change to Line 2 for the Central Bus Station, or use a metered taxi. Allow an hour; ticket machines accept cards but rarely banknotes.
Board a direct coach south; several operators run the route and departures cluster around midday. Buy at the counter rather than from touts, and keep your bag in the hold with valuables on your lap.
Ease into the trip in the craft quarter, where small bars pour local Mavrud and Mavrud blends. Seating spills into the lanes after 20:00; order a mixed plate of cheese and cured meat to share.

Yes for the highlights. Two nights in Plovdiv covers the old town, Roman theatre and Kapana district, and two nights in Veliko Tarnovo covers Tsarevets, the light show and the old lanes. You lose half a day to each transfer via Sofia, so start early and keep the final night near Sofia airport.
Buses are generally faster and more frequent between the two, usually routing through Sofia or Stara Zagora and taking most of a day. Direct services are limited, so check schedules the day before. Trains are slower and less convenient for these hill towns. A shared transfer or rental car saves time if your budget allows.
The audio-visual show is usually staged on summer evenings on Tsarevets hill, with schedules set by the municipality and often tied to the season or special dates. Check the Veliko Tarnovo tourist office or your accommodation on arrival for that week's timing, and arrive early for a good viewpoint.
The old towns are genuinely steep and cobbled, with uneven stone lanes and stairs. Wear flat shoes with grip and allow extra time. Plovdiv's old town has slopes but shorter distances; Tsarevets involves a climb to the hilltop. Travellers with mobility limits should plan shorter loops and use taxis between the lower town and the entrances.
