Yes, self-drive is strongly recommended. Public buses in the Peloponnese are infrequent and rarely connect the sites directly. Pick up the car in Athens and drop it at Kalamata for the return flight, or loop back to Athens. Book an automatic early if you need one, and expect narrow mountain roads.
April to June and September to October are the most comfortable. Archaeological sites like Mycenae and Mystras have little shade, and July-August heat regularly reaches 30-35°C. Spring brings wildflowers, while autumn offers warm days and quieter hotels. Winter is mild but wetter on the mainland.
Fly into Athens, which has the widest choice of international flights, then drive south. Kalamata is useful as the departure point at the end of this route, but its flight network is limited. If you use both, check one-way rental surcharges and confirm the drop-off office hours before booking.
Comfort-level costs run about $1,200-1,790 (roughly €1,040-1,560) per person excluding international flights. That covers a rental car, guesthouses and taverna meals. Add fuel, tolls and any site tickets separately, and book the car early for the best weekly rate.
