Take a direct highway bus from Shinjuku or Tokyo Station to Kawaguchiko, or the Fujikyuko line with a change at Otsuki. Buses are cheaper but can sit in weekend traffic, so allow a buffer before sunset.
Walk the northern shore for the classic view of Mount Fuji across the water, best in clear evening light. The path is free and flat; clouds often hide the peak, so check the forecast and try again at sunrise.
Eat hoto, a thick miso noodle stew with pumpkin and mountain vegetables, at a local restaurant. Portions are large and warming in winter; many kitchens close by 21:00, so do not delay after sunset.

The official climbing season runs early July to early September, when huts, toilets and rescue services operate. Mountain huts and the climbing fee must be reserved in advance, and the Yoshida route is the most popular, so book as soon as dates open.
Visibility depends on season and time of day. Clear views are most likely in the cooler months and early morning, while summer haze and cloud often hide the peak by afternoon. Build in two nights near the lakes or Hakone to improve your chances.
Hakone has a compact transport network of trains, cable cars, a ropeway and sightseeing boats across Lake Ashi, often sold as a combined pass. Buses link the main stations and onsen villages; check the last ropeway and boat times before planning a late return.
The Yoshida route is the most gradual and has the most huts, but altitude, cold nights and long queues still make it a serious hike. Allow a night at a hut to acclimatise, carry layers and water, and consider the Fifth Station viewpoint if fitness is limited.
