The trip opens in Bilbao with the Guggenheim, then an hour by train to San Sebastian for a full-day pintxos crawl across 10-plus bars in the Old Town. A drive inland reaches La Rioja for winery tastin…
The titanium curves beside the Nervion are free to walk around, and the riverside promenade leads to the Zubizuri footbridge. Interior tickets are timed; the outdoor sculpture terrace is enough on an arrival day.
The riverside market's upper floor has bars serving bacalao al pil-pil and txakoli wine at counter prices. It closes at 15:00, so eat before 14:00; the fish stalls below are liveliest on Saturday.
Euskotren runs hourly from Atxuri and takes over two hours on the slow scenic route, while Lurraldebus coaches leave from Termibus. Take the coach if time matters; the coastal train is the prettier option.

Pintxos bars in the Old Town are mostly walk-in, so a crawl needs no reservations. Sit-down and Michelin-starred restaurants do need booking, often one to three months ahead for weekends. San Sebastian has one of the highest Michelin densities per capita, so reserve as soon as your dates are set.
May to June and September to October are best, when seafood is at its richest, wineries are open for tastings and summer crowds have not peaked. Late September coincides with Rioja harvest, which adds vineyard activity. July and August are hot and busy, and some Rioja producers slow down during harvest logistics.
An hourly train links Bilbao and San Sebastian in about an hour. La Rioja is easiest by rental car from San Sebastian, since wineries sit outside towns like Haro and Elciego. From Logrono, the AVE connects to Madrid. Book the AVE leg early and confirm winery tasting appointments in advance.
Expect roughly $1,940-2,690 (about EUR 1,690-2,340) per person excluding international flights, which covers good hotels, transport and many meals. Michelin tables and premium Rioja tastings can add significantly, so set a separate dining budget. Book tastings and restaurants early to control costs.
