Spain Wilderness: Picos de Europa National Park in 8 Days

May to September is the main window, when alpine meadows are in flower, the Fuente De cable car runs and high trails are passable. Snow can linger into late spring, and autumn storms arrive by October. July and August are busiest but have the most reliable weather. Always check a mountain forecast before setting out.

The route runs about 12 km one way and takes around six hours, with a narrow path cut into the rock, some exposed sections and a tunnel. It is largely level but long, so plan transport back to your start rather than retracing the whole way. Wear sturdy shoes and carry water and rain layers.

Mountain weather changes fast, so bring windproof and waterproof layers even in summer, plus sturdy hiking shoes, sun protection and a refillable bottle for the day hikes. Temperatures drop at altitude and on the Fuente De cable car. Check trail conditions and cable car operating status locally before each hike.
