Arrive in Sofia, hike the Seven Rila Lakes loop, then east to Kazanlak in the Rose Valley for the rose-oil museum, a rose-picking-season experience and the UNESCO Thracian tomb, then the bus to Plovdi…
Collect your car at the arrivals hall, photograph existing damage and confirm the fuel policy before leaving. Buy a vignette if your route uses toll roads; the rental desk can usually add one.
Drive or take the metro to your hotel and leave the car parked for the evening. Central parking is scarce and costly; choose a hotel with a garage and explore on foot tonight.
Try rose jam, yogurt with honey and a glass of rose liqueur at a dessert cafe, a preview of the valley ahead. Cafes stay open late; Vitosha Boulevard is easy to walk after the car is parked.

The Kazanlak rose harvest typically runs from late May into early June, with exact dates shifting with the weather each year. Check official Rose Valley or Kazanlak tourism updates before booking, since picking can start early or late. Outside the bloom, the rose-oil museum and Thracian tomb still make the region worth visiting.
A car makes this route far easier. Public transport in the Rose Valley is sparse, and reaching the Seven Rila Lakes trailhead by bus is awkward. Small local group tours are the other practical option. If you self-drive, book a rental in Sofia or Plovdiv and allow extra time for mountain and rural roads.
The route is moderate rather than technical. The chairlift climbs to around 2,000 metres, then a marked path links the seven lakes with some steep, rocky sections. Allow three to four hours. Snow can linger into June, and afternoon storms are common, so start early, check the lift's operating dates and carry layers and water.
The original Kazanlak Thracian tomb is a small, protected chamber with limited access, so visitors often view a replica nearby at the Iskra museum while the original opens on rotation. Check current access arrangements and tickets locally or through the museum. Combine it with the rose-oil museum and a rose-field visit in the same area.
